Bresson's story of man's inhumanity to man revolves around Balthazar, a donkey, whose life we follow from birth until death. The story follows the various tasks he is set, drawing a carriage, a child's plaything, circus attraction, turning a grindstone and finally a drug smuggler's means of transport.
